A Letter To My Younger Self...

Tuesday 16 February 2016
Dear 13 year old Artika,

I am writing this to you eight years from now. It may not sound long, but believe me when I say that a lot has changed.

Right now, you're probably adjusting to secondary school life, and I can promise you that no matter how restricting the school may be, those five years will be the best years of your life (yes, spoiler alert, you managed to brave through N-Levels).

Secondary school life is where you'll learn the true meaning of friendship, love and loss and the importance of failure. I know, what do I ever mean by importance of failure, right?

Everyone has always been taught at a young age on how important it is to do well in school in order to succeed in life but what we don't realize is that we actually learn more through failures and setbacks, and trust me when I say that you will experience loads of failures.

This is why I need you to understand that failing in school does not equate to failing in life. Do not let small things like exam results and critics stop you from dreaming - and I know that you love to dream big. You will meet a lot of people who will try to bring you down - academically and emotionally -but you have to remember that bad days don't last so to whoever who will be underestimating you or will cause you any pain, give them the finger and walk away.

In secondary school, you'll also feel as though having a boyfriend is the most important thing in the world and I know that I won't be the first to say this but they're all right.

As I'm writing this to you, I'm not exactly at the right emotional state to be giving you relationship advice. But I do understand how great it feels to be loved deeply. Falling in love can be pretty addictive because when you've experienced it once, you don't want that feeling to stop. It feels good to be considered and to be cared for in a way only one person can make you feel, but you have to realize that you do not need a guy to make you feel special because you are special.

Also, as you're growing up, the most cliche advice anyone will ever give you is that "life gets better". But I hate to break it to you because sometimes, life is just a piece of shit.

You're gonna have your heart broken so many times you can barely even count. Friends will betray you and there will be days when you'll lost your way. So this is why I need you to stay strong because you're the only person you've got.

So yes, life may not get better and you will be challenged to face lots of difficult days - but one thing that will come out of it is strength and maturity which will help you through other tough days in the future.

(Of course, I'm not saying that you'll grow to become fully mature and sophisticated woman because between you and me, you'll always be as goofy as fuck. Still, embrace it!)

Lastly, live your life with no regrets and as always, stay awesome <3

  1. My mum always say that the world is always round. One minute you are up and the next minute you are down. Life is full of lesson and you never stop learning as you grow. Embrace every second of it, good or bad, cos once it pass, you can never get it back.......
